Simple Tips to Replace a Toilet on your own

Replacing a toilet which has been in use doesn’t require any specific plumbing skills, but the person who is trying to do so must be very careful because in an existing toilet, water supply and pipelines are already in connection. Any wrong step can lead to the water pipeline bursting or getting punctured.

When do we need to replace a toilet?

You would usually need to replace your existing toilet in one of the following situations:

  • Remodeling: When you are planning to remodel your bathroom
  • Leakage: When there is a leakage in your toilet’s tank or bowl
  • Overflow of water tank: When the water is continuously overflowing / flowing out of the toilet tank or toilet bowl

  • Modification in toilet appearance: When you decide to modify your existing toilet with the latest designer toilet
  • Breakage: When a breakage in any part of your toilet either requires re-installation of that part or the whole component

How do we go about replacing our toilet?

The steps given below show you how to do so:

Toilet Seat Repair

1. Turn off the main water supply to the tank

2. Remove the tank cover and refill tube

3. Flush multiple times so that whole water is drained out from the toilet tank

4. Disconnect the flapper chain

5. Unscrew nuts attached to the toilet tank and remove tank from above the bowl

6. For the toilet bowl, start by removing the bolt caps and unscrewing the nuts

7. Move the bowl in sideways motion to loosen its grip on the floor and place it in the corner

8. Remove wax ring from the toilet and the floor and clean the floor around the drain-hole

9. Place a new wax ring on the drain-hole and carefully position the new toilet bowl on top of the drain hole





wax ring for toilet10. You only get one chance to place it correctly on top of the drain hole. If you miss it you will need to replace the wax ring again, else there will be always be a gap between the bowl and the floor, and water will keep oozing out of it

11. Slowly and carefully move the bowl slightly up and down while trying to make it sit level on the floor

13. Once the toilet is set properly on the floor, you need to fit the tank on top of the bowl

15. Install the rubber gasket on the bottom of the tank

16. Insert the tank bolts and rubber washers from inside the tank, through the mounting area of the bowl

17. The wax ring on the waste horn should be installed with the thin end facing the toilet

18. Seal the joint line where the bowl sits on the toilet floor using a silicone caulk gun and wait for 30 minutes to 2 hours for the silicone to harden

19. Turn the water back on and test the new toilet for any leaks
